The dedicated Stolen Sounds trio, Vonborsig, Kimberdarling and myself, had been planning on visiting Memphis at what just strangely happened to be the same time Gonerfest 3 was in full swing. Odd how things work out isn't it? There was another adventurer, but her contributions would be weak considering that she spent the evening puking in the bathroom and puking out front for the 5 minutes she was there. It's better we don't talk about it.
I am writing this a month after the fact so don't expect much. I just wanted to post some pictures of the awesome bands we caught.

We made it Thursday evening just in time to catch the Carbonas from Atlanta. They play hi-octane rock and roll and were a very nice surprise because I had heard pretty good things. This was a rockin set and I almost got to see Greg's underwear or wanker depending on his laundry habits thanks to an overzealous young lady up front. He nonchalantly returned his studded belt to it's proper resting place and continued to thrash about. I think we were better off. http://www.myspace.com/thecarbonas

Promptly after the Carbonas ended appered the new Black Rose Band featuring none other that the infamous local legend King Louie. He really is a great performer and the support team he has assembled with this band is stellar. Rock blues cranked up and dirty is the sound of this crew. They sounded great and really put on an interesting visual show with duet lead parts and the whole bit. King Louie has an incredible presence and is not to be missed in any lineup. http://www.myspace.com/blackrosenola

Friday Vonborsig and I toured the Gibson museum and checked out more of Memphis and Beale St. The funny thing is that places like these are all so similar that the flair is a bit lost on me now. The watered down house band versions of blues, pop and rock standards echo throughout and the atmosphere wreaks of party streets all over the country. Kimberdarling wanted to get loaded and dance... soooo Vonborsig and I drank heavily and found a happy place. I watched Kimberdarling kickin a leg up and Vonborsig watched the homeless guys hassle business people for money. We missed some good bands at Gonerfest that night, but what can you do ya know? There were only like a billion bands playing in succession and after 10 or 12 I start to hate them all regardless of how much I like them.

Saturday was Elvis day. We also toured Sun Studios. Unfortunately we missed the Jeff Evans guided tour. I was pretty dissappointed. The tickets had to be pre-purchased through Goner. It's my own fault. Enough said. If you haven't done that stuff. Do it.

Finally Saturday night we made it back to the Hi-Tone to catch a few insanely good bands starting with Viva L'American Death Ray Music. The Cococomas had just finished. SHIT. I really wanted to see that. Death Ray totally made up for it. Harlan T Bobo was onstage looking all cool as always. The songs were so groovy that I actually felt like dancing myself and did in a spastic forced by gunpoint fashion. We can't all have moves. This band is going to make a lot of people happy. http://www.myspace.com/vivalamericandeathraymusic

Cheveu took the stage next and I cannot begin to describe the atmosphere they create. Digital drum beats voice loop grit blues guitar harmonica screech mayhem with this underlying smooth whiskey laden coolness comes pretty close. This is where Kimberdarling inevitably decided she should have been shaking her butt all along. Apparently they are a part of a wave of exciting new stuff coming out of France and I can't wait until American distros start carrying multiple albums of this stuff. For now pick up the vinyl ep being distributed by Goner and be happy you even have that. Youtube has numerous videos of the guys performing as well. Oh Lola Langusta... give me more. http://www.myspace.com/cheveu

Jack Oblivion needs no introduction or kind words from me. He is amazing on stage and this was THE perfect way to end our Goner experience. I felt privileged to be there. Really. Harlan T. Bobo on bass again without even breaking a sweat. I love the incestuous nature of these bands in the Memphis scene. It's cool to see a guy get on stage 3 times in a night and mix it up while remaining true to the essence of each band and sounding great. Adam is so incredible. He was fun to watch. He is a multi-talented genius when it comes to the synthesizer and he also had a huge bank of noise-making capabilities.
That's it. We had a blast and we'll see you there next year.
